A passenger was arrested after leaving a 'threatening note' in the toilet of a plane travelling from Sydney to Albury.

The police would not comment on what the note aboard the Virgin plane said, but according to reports in The Australian, the note stated a bomb had been stashed on the plane on Tuesday.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: "A man is currently assisting police with their enquiries following an incident with a plane at Albury.

"At about 9.20am, police and emergency services attended Albury Airport after receiving information that a note was left in the toilet area in the plane."

Virgin Australia confirmed there had been an incident. In a statement, the airline said: "Virgin Australia flight VA1174 from Sydney to Albury landed safely this morning.

"Due to a security incident on board police met the aircraft on arrival. One passenger is assisting police with their enquiries.

"All guests disembarked safely and a full search of the aircraft was conducted by the local police and the aircraft has been cleared of any potential danger.

"The matter is now in the hands of the New South Wales police."

A passenger told the Australian Associated Press that a flight attendant had said: "Leave your luggage. Get out and run, run, run."

However, this has been disputed by a spokesperson from Virgin.

A police spokesperson told The Australian: "It was just someone being very silly. What this is showing is we do take things very seriously.

"At the end of the day he caused a lot of angst and frightened a lot of people."

Michelle McNamara, who works for a car hire company at the airport told the news AAP: "It's normally quiet. It's Albury Airport.

"It's a bit concerning. With all that's happening in the world, it makes you think the worst."

The 30-year-old man has been charged with sending a document threatening death or grievous bodily harm and giving false information.

He has been released on bail and will appear in court on 4 July.
