A man who asked hotel staff for a 'game' to help take his mind off work was delighted when they not only indulged his bizarre request, but also went above and beyond with it - meaning he was still playing the next day.
Thom (@tommymodeactivated) posted a video on TikTok to tell the tale of the 'infamous apple incident of 2019'.

It turns out he'd asked hotel staff to 'hide an apple somewhere' in his room for him to find, saying in a friendly email: "Hi there, I'll be staying two nights with you from Thursday 31/10 to Saturday 02/11 and was wondering if I could ask a favour?
"It may seem a little strange, but can you please hide an apple somewhere in my room for me to find? I travel often, and these small games help take my mind off work and lower my stress levels.
"The type of apple doesn't concern me as I enjoy them all. I did have a 'Papple' recently that I didn't quite care for - I believe it was a pear/apple hybrid... Anyway, I digress - a Granny Smith always satisfies!"

Thom received an email back to say the hotel would do its best to 'accommodate' his request, but it wasn't until he checked in that he realised just how much they came through.
He recalled in the TikTok video: "As I checked in, the lady at reception laughed when she saw my name and said, 'So you're the apple boy?'"
Thom was told staff had 'actually hidden five apples' in his room, and up he went to try and find them.
The first four were found with relative ease - the first in the hotel room safe, followed up by a second underneath the pillows on his bed and another in the door of the mini fridge.
It took him a while to find the fourth, which was in the drawer of his bedside table, but the fifth proved so elusive that he had to abandon the search to go to bed.

It wasn't until the next day that Thom gave it another stab and revisited a hiding spot he'd already checked - but not well enough.
Holding up the kettle, he opened the lid to reveal a shiny red apple hanging out inside.
Thom's video has since gone viral, racking up 1.8 million likes and 9.2 million views.

One person commented: "Imagine they hid the apples in the wrong room and some random person is losing their mind because they keep finding apples."
Someone else said: "I would've only hidden 4 and told you I hid 5."
A third added: "Good way to get free snacks."
Certainly beats a tiny biscuit and stealing the slippers.
