Announcing the charge, chief crown prosecutor Jaswant Narwal said: "Following the death of PC Harper in Berkshire, the Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Thames Valley Police to charge Jed Foster, 20, with murder and the theft of a quad bike.

"We will offer to meet with PC Harper's family to explain the basis of the decision we have made following a lengthy review of the evidence available.

"May I remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Foster are now active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."

Detectives continued to question ten males arrested on suspicion of murdering PC Harper. Aged between 13 and 30, they were apprehended on a caravan site at a nearby junction within an hour.

Police were granted a further 24 hours to question those arrested. Included among the suspects were a 13-year-old, two 16-year-olds, two 17-year-olds, an 18-year-old, two 20-year-olds, a 24-year-old and a 30-year-old.

PC Harper had married his wife just weeks prior to the incident and was due to go on his honeymoon with his wife Lissie.

Deputy Chief Constable Jason Hogg offered his sympathies to the police officer's family.

He said: "Our deepest thoughts at this time are of course with Andrew's friends and family, who are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

"Our thoughts also extend to all of Andrew's colleagues within Thames Valley Police.

"As a force we are devastated at the loss of our colleague and will all be supporting each other at this difficult time."

Fans held a minute's silence in his memory during Reading's match against Cardiff City over the weekend.

Det Supt Ailsa Kent, of the Major Crime Unit at Thames Valley Police, said the men were arrested at Four Houses Corner - a local authority site three miles from where Andrew died.
