A man has gone viral after encouraging his wife through labour with a booklet containing motivational messages.

Kendall Caver was with his wife Jasmine as she went through two days of labour at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this month.

In the video, he can be seen standing alongside her bed, flipping through a series of pages featuring reassuring words and anecdotes of their time together.

Kendall shared memories from their past.

The video went viral online, having been shared by various news outlets across the globe.

While some people have praised Kendall for his creativity and thoughtfulness, many others have criticised what he did.

One Twitter user wrote: "If my husband did this while I was in labour, I would have punched him in the face."

Another commented: "She is clearly a better woman than me. I would have been driven to the foulest of language by the first sign of a motivational message."

Unsurprisingly, even Piers Morgan has an opinion:

And comedian and actor Robert Webb also said: "Yeah. Or just turn the f***ing camera off and hold her hand you insufferable t***."

But while the online world hasn't been quite so polite about Kendall's actions, it seems as though Jasmine appreciated what he did - which is what matters most, ultimately.

Kendall explained he had good reason for the motivational booklet - revealing Jasmine was feeling anxious in the weeks leading up to her due date, having previously had a miscarriage.

He said: "I wanted to do something that could help take her mind off all that was happening and to help her focus on her breathing."

The booklet was made up of memories from their life together, interspersed with a reminder for Jasmine to 'breathe' throughout the process.

In the messages, Kendall mentioned the 'rough times' he and Jasmine had been through, referencing a 'pregnancy loss'.

The final pages said: "You are my best friend, soulmate and in just a few pushes, you'll be the most amazing mother our daughter could ever ask for."

And thankfully, it seemed to have the desired effect, as Kendall said Jasmine 'laughed, smiled and cried' during the storytelling.

Kendall later took to Facebook to announce Jasmine gave birth to a baby girl, Sofia Isabel Caver, on 3 September.

Congratulations, guys!
