A man is in a coma after being attacked with a single punch in Ibiza.

Gavin Robertson, from Stewarton in Ayrshire, is fighting for his life after he sustained a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain in the attack.

The 26-year was rushed to Policlinica del Rosaria hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.

Gavin was on a stag do with his pals when he was punched in the back of the head by a stranger while using an ATM.

Gavin was enjoying a lads' holiday in Ibiza when he was attacked.

His mum Kirsty McMaster, 45, and aunt Paula Marshall, 37, rushed out to Ibiza to be at Gavin's bedside and his friend's are raising funds to help bring him home.

Speaking to the Sun, Kirsty said: "Gavin's in a stable condition in an induced coma just now.

"But we don't know if or when he will wake up.

"The doctors say it will be at least five days before they try to take him off it, so this week is critical.

"The pressure on his brain keeps going up and down. We just don't know what the lasting damage could be."

She told the paper her son was due to come home from Ibiza on Wednesday (28 August), but instead she received a call from his friends who broke the bad news.

His mum says the attack was unprovoked and came out of nowhere.

"As far as I'm aware they had been having a great time," she told the Daily Record. "They hadn't had any problems with anyone. I'm told what happened was totally random. They were out on a night out and he went to the cash machine and the worst thing happened."

Gavin had travelled without insurance and now his friends are helping to raise funds to get him home.

One of Kirsty's friends has set up a Facebook fundraiser, which has raised more than £22,000 ($26k) in two days.

Kirsty added: "I didn't know he didn't have insurance. He's a grown man now. I didn't think I had to remind him about that.

"There's nothing we can do about it now. We just have to look at other ways to help. I'm told it's not the medicals bills that will be the problem, it will be his flight home if he needs medical assistance that could cost us tens of thousands.

"I'd like thank everyone who has already donated. We have been overwhelmed with the support and well-wishes."
