Witnesses claimed that Mr Wilks and a friend approached them carrying butchers' knives and Mr Starnes, unaware of the prank, shot Mr Wilks in retaliation.

Mr Starnes has allegedly told the police that he reacted in self defence as he was not in on the joke.

Sky News reports that an investigation has begun and no one has been charged with Mr Wilks' death as yet.

Metro Nashville police say that Mr Wilks was shot just before 9.30pm and explained how he was filming a robbery prank for a YouTube channel.

One lawyer told local Fox affilate WZTV: "I'm sure the people involved would like to characterise this as a prank. But it certainly seems to be a prank that went seriously awry."
