A Birmingham man has miraculously survived after being shot in the head.

"A man in his 30s has been taken to hospital with a head injury which is not believed to be life-threatening. The road has been cordoned off while investigations into the street shooting are carried out."

He also suffered injuries to his arm and chest and was taken to hospital by local ambulance and paramedic teams.

"On arrival, crews discovered a man in his 30s with injuries to his arm, chest and head," confirmed West Midlands Ambulance Service. "Following treatment from ambulance staff at the scene, the man, who was fully conscious, was transported to hospital for further assessment."

The local health provider also said that the injured person had been the victim of a shooting, confirming that a gunshot wound had been reported in Arthur Street, Small Heath.

The location of the shooting is a residential street, just a few hundred metres from Birmingham City Football Club's home ground of St Andrew's.

Birmingham's gun problem has become more widely publicised in recent weeks, with several high profile incidents in the West Midlands. The region is already the gun crime capital of the United Kingdom, with 562 firearms offences reported in 2016 and 110 guns seized over the last year.

A man was shot in the back in the Lozells district of the city on 25th June. The victim survived, but the gunman remains at large. Later last week, on 29th June, a teenager was hit in the ankle by a bullet in the Hockley area of Birmingham after a drive-by shooting. Again, the perpetrator has not been caught.

While taking a gunshot to the head is usually fatal - only five percent make a full recovery - there have been several incidences in which people have survived.

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the face by the Taliban and later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, was treated in Birmingham and made a near full recovery.

Meanwhile, Patrick Ireland took a bullet in the head during the Columbine high school shooting in 1999 and managed to extricate himself from the school and went on to graduate and return to normal life.
