A man who kicked a woman in the back of the legs to create a viral video has been forced to pay her £52,500 in compensation.

Wannabe prankster Mario Garcia Montealegre was filmed doing a 'kung-fu-style' kick on the unsuspecting woman in the Diagonal Mar area of Barcelona, Spain back in February 2015.

In the clip Montealegre, who is now 26, can be seen counting down on his fingers before running up to the woman, who was 48 at the time, and kicking her on the left calf.

She can be seen twisting awkwardly before falling to the ground. As the two men giggle at the incident, the woman can be heard shouting 'arsehole'.

Catalan police force Mossos d'Esquadra released footage of the video, with the caption: "Help us to catch this person who thinks it is okay to attack innocent people."

The video quickly went viral, with social media users furious over the man's behaviour.

Montealegre ended up handing himself in after the video hit headlines.

El Pais reports that the man filming Álvaro Gragera also appeared in court. With the news outlet reporting that the prosecutor had pressed for a custodial sentence for the men.

He has since agreed to pay the unnamed woman €60,000 (£52,500) in compensation.

Prosecutors had initially pushed for €45,000 (£39,400) in damages, however Montealegre said he wanted to show his willingness to make amends for his actions.

Following the incident, the woman sprained an ankle, suffered minor injuries to her left knee and wrist, as well as back pain which kept her on sick leave for 75 days.

The prosecutor said the woman "presents post-traumatic stress in relation to the aggression suffered, with indicators such as increased distrust of the intentions of others, anger over incomprehension of gratuitous violence and no feel helped at the time of the events by the people who witnessed them."

Spanish newspaper El Mundo found an additonal clip from 2013 in which Montealegre kicks out the ankles of two young women who are walking along the sea front in Benidorm.
