A man who allegedly thought he had been scratched by a cat had actually suffered a gunshot wound and now, the incident is being treated as attempted murder.

Nemi Chand from Rajasthan, northern India, was lying fast asleep on 16 Sept where he felt a slight pain. He assumed it was due to his cat scratching him and decided to think nothing of it.

For seven hours, the 35-year old electrical lineman ignored the pain in his rib cage whilst sleeping in a room with three others.

The bullet narrowly missed the man's vital organs.

However, it was only until a roommate discovered an empty bullet shell next to him which led Nemi to realise that his injury wasn't just a 'cat-scratch' but was, in fact, a gunshot wound.

After going to the hospital for an x-ray, it was revealed that the bullet lodged under his skin had only just missed his vital organs.

He was then taken to surgery to have the bullet removed on the following Friday morning (September 17).

Orthopaedic surgeons Vardharam Dewasi and Narseeram thoroughly washed out the wound with sterilising fluid to prevent infection after successfully removing the bullet.

It is understood the man is expected to make a full recovery.

However, the Raniwara police are now treating the case as attempted murder and further investigations are ongoing.

The bullet was successfully removed by surgeons the following day.

As bizarre as it sounds, this isn't the first time a dangerous incident like this has happened.

Earlier this year, a man in the US woke up with hip pain only to discover he had been shot.

The unnamed man, in his fifties, was sleeping in his single-storey house in Buena Vista Township, Michigan, on 1 September when he was awoken by a sharp pain in his hip.

The man then realised he had a gunshot wound and police responded just before 3am, deputy chief Jim Baker told MLive. He was then taken to hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound.

Cops established that the gunshot had been fired from outside and found several shell casings outside the property.

The victim didn't hear the shot or see the shooter, and officers currently have no suspects.

LADbible has contacted Buena Vista Township for an update on the case.
