Marvel president Kevin Feige has penned a letter to fans of the franchise, thanking them for their support, after Avengers: Infinity War achieved the biggest opening weekend of all time.

The film shattered the record held by The Fate of the Furious ($542 million / £392m), with an estimated $640.9m (£468.8m) earned at the global box office during its opening weekend.

A grateful Feige took to Twitter to thank fans for supporting the franchise.

He posted an image of a note addressed to 'the greatest fans' - beside an Infinity War cap, a Loki key ring and a Thanos glove - in which he had written: "The past ten years have been an unforgettable ride and we couldn't have done it without the entire team at Marvel Studious, our incredible talent in front of and behind the camera, the visionary comic book creators, bust most importantly you.

"Thank you for embracing these characters and stories since we kicked off the MCU ten years ago. This past weekend was a result beyond our wildest dreams.

"On behalf of everyone here at Marvel Studios, we thank you for being the best fans in the universe and making Avengers: Infinity War the biggest opening weekend of all time."

Feige's contract is set to end with Marvel in 2018. The producer, who had previously worked on You've Got Mail, somewhat contrastingly, has been at the company for over a decade.

His letter is a moving tribute to all the people involved in the success of the film (and the series), with fans flocking to see just what happens in the highly-anticipated gathering of Black Panther, Iron Man and the rest of the gang as they team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on the universe-conquering Thanos - who is pretty nails, as the film reveals.

Feige is himself a lesson in triumph over adversity. The producer was rejected from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts five times before being accepted at the sixth attempt.

In addition to its huge success in Canada and the USA, Infinity War broke records in South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and several other countries around the world.

It was also well received by critics, with an 84 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That said, if you were a film critic up against 76 Marvel characters, good and bad, you wouldn't start slagging off the film now, would you?
