Meghan Markle was left open-mouthed in shock when she bumped into a fan she had previously spoken to on Instagram.

The Duchess of Sussex was in Auckland with husband Harry when she spotted Hannah Sergel in the crowds.

The woman had travelled from Christchurch to Auckland in order to meet the Duchess and waited for hours to get a glimpse, but wasn't expecting to get the reaction she did.

Twenty-year-old Hannah was stood with a sign which read: "It's Hannah from Instagram".

When Meghan saw it, her mouth fell open and she was heard saying 'Ooh my God' before rushing over to give her a big hug.

Meghan and Hannah used to message each other on the social media site, with Hannah revealing that the former Suits star had offer support and encouragement when she had been struggling with ill health.

Hannah handed Meghan a letter, which the Duchess told her she would read.

Taking to Instagram, Hannah wrote: "Yes, that's Meghan Markle holding my letter and recognising me. Still in shock tbh."

She told 9Honey: "She recognised me and knew who I was so that's why she came over.

"She gave me a hug which was incredible - when I first saw her, I cried. She's just such an incredible person and I'm just so glad she's happy with Harry."

Meghan deleted her Instagram shortly after Kensington Palace announced she and Harry were in relationship.

Speaking to 1 News, Hannah said: "I was friends with her on Instagram before she had to deactivate her account. We used to have conversations and stuff on there.

"She would tell me to do well at university and encourage me to be myself."

Hannah's mate filmed the moment and it's since been shared on Twitter where it's picked up thousands of views.

Hannah said New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Arden messaged her following the meeting to send her a snap of the moment Meghan spotted her in the crowd.

It's been a busy few days for Meghan and Harry who have taken part in their first royal tour since getting hitched back in May - in the last 16 days they've been to Australia, Tonga, Fiji and New Zealand.
