There are a lot of opinions around instant coffee.

Some people might not have access to a decent barista around the corner or might not have time to whip up an almond latte and therefore instant is their next best option.

Opponents say the jars and tins of the brown stuff are disgusting and essentially good for nothing.

Well, try telling that to an Australian man who has fended off a wannabe car thief with a jar of Nescafé Blend 43.

Jason was visiting his local servo in Frankston, Melbourne when a man, armed with a fake gun, demanded he hand over the keys to his car.

The Melbournian refused and the alleged criminal whacked him in the head.

Jason was knocked to the ground and his beloved Nescafé jar smashed on the ground. While that might be terrible news to instant coffee lovers, it gave Jason a makeshift weapon in the shape of sharp glass.

CCTV cameras captured the man using the shard of glass to fend off his attacker.

His quick thinking saved him and his car from being victim to this unknown attacker.

Speaking to Sunrise, Jason said: "When he came from behind...as soon as I turned around he had the gun pointed at me. I tried to make some distance and he was coming at me."

He explained how the attacker just kept repeating himself and shouting to hand over the keys. But Jason said, after watching too many crimes play out across his city, he wasn't going to go down without a fight.

So the next time you slag off instant coffee for being worth nothing, it can certainly help you in a time of need.
