Utterly silly, and a waste of lives.

This is the shocking footage of the moment when a multi-millionaire Greek retail magnate's son killed himself and three others in a reported 120mph motorway crash.

The incident took place on a stretch of motorway between Athens and the town of Delphi, resulting in a huge explosion.

In footage you can see Vakakis' luxury sports car shooting off the road and ploughing into the side of the parked family car, sending both vehicles crashing into a building in a ball of flames. One of the men, who had allegedly not been wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the Porsche during the collision, but both died from their injuries.

Here is the footage, which is graphic and could cause distress.

George Vakakis, 24, and his friend, Andreas Georgakopoulos, were killed instantly when his Porsche careered off the road at breakneck speeds and into a parked car, containing a 33-year-old mother and her young child, who were tragically killed too.

The husband of the woman in the parked car looked on in horror as his Honda Civic, which he had stopped legally in a spot next to the emergency lane, was smashed into by Vakakis' rented sports car.

Unable to help his family and in a state of shock, the 41-year-old man called the police and fire brigade.

Son of Greek Millionaire and retail tycoon Apostolos Vakakis, George had always been considered the future heir to his father's empire.

Mr. Vakakis senior is owner of the Jumbo children's toy distributor, Greece's largest enterprise, operating dozens of stores throughout the country. It also has a presence in Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Cyprus, Kosovo, Albania, and Macedonia. Profits in 2015 totalled £666 million.

Vakakis Jr had been taking a break from his studies in the United States to come back to Greece and visit family.

George's Facebook account has been memorialised but no tributes are currently visible and the Vakakis family have not yet made any comment on the incident.

Speeding is one of the biggest causes of fatal road traffic accidents and it's worth remembering that even travelling a few miles per hour over the limit can be the difference between life and death.

Only one month ago, over-grown boy racer Farid Reza was jailed for causing the death of 21-year-old student Hina Shamim by dangerous driving.

The 36-year-old had been racing against William Spicer, 28, shortly before the crash. His car was picked up on CCTV skipping red lights, not long before it hurtled into the side of a double decker bus at around 70mph.

Farid Reza will serve five years in prison for the death of the young sports science student.
