A Primark model friend of Kate Moss has been jailed for five years in Indonesia after police raided his home and found about £30 worth of cannabis.

Jed Texas, 30, was arrested in Bali and handed a lengthy sentence under the nation's notoriously strict drug laws.

He will now spend the next five years inside the infamous Kerobokan Prison.

Texas - real name Jed Higgins - was arrested back in April when police raided his villa in the resort of Canggu after a tip-off.

Upon entering the property, they found 85.15 grams of cannabis, as well as a small set of electronic scales.

Texas admitted his guilt at his trial via video link to Denpasar District Court, and said he was using cannabis to treat his anxiety after not being allowed to return home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He also said that his actions had left him ashamed of himself and in pain.

He'll appeal the decision to convict him, hoping that his defence of using the drug for anxiety will lead to a more lenient sentence.

Police told the court that Texas ran from his bedroom to the bathroom and attempted to flush the bags of cannabis down the toilet.

Texas told the court: "I couldn't go home [during the pandemic] so I bought a lot of marijuana to relieve my anxiety."

The model - who has worked for top brands such as Burberry and Prada, as well as Primark - received a £60,000 fine, which will result in an extra six months of imprisonment if not paid.

He had faced up to 20 years in prison.

Judge Gede Putra Astawa said: "Texas is guilty of committing a criminal act by possessing narcotics type one. I sentence Jed Texas to five years in prison, reduced for his time in detention (seven months).

"The defendant's actions have damaged the image of Bali as a tourist destination."

Texas added: "I admit that my using marijuana in Indonesia is against the law. I am very sorry. I knew it was illegal, but I didn't think the sentence would be so high like this. I use it to treat psychological disorders.

"Marijuana is legal in the UK so my access to it is easy [there]. This case has left me with constant pain and shame."

Cannabis is illegal in the UK unless prescribed by a doctor.

Now, Texas will spend his sentence in Kerobokan Prison, renowned as one of the most violent and dangerous jails.
