More than 2,000 medically preserved fetal remains have been found at the home of an abortion doctor who passed away on 3 September, authorities in Illinois have said.

Ulrich Klopfer used to operate a women's health facility in South Bend, but according to WNDU, his licence was suspended in 2015.

The 2,246 fetal remains were found on Thursday at his home in Will County, around 45 miles from Chicago.

The Will County Coroner's Office in Illinois said in a statement it received a call from an attorney representing his family, who had discovered what appeared to be the remains of fetuses.

The family asked for assistance in properly removing them, which was when detectives arrived at the property and found the medically preserved remains.

The statement also confirmed the coroner's office took them away, and that the family is fully cooperating with the investigation.

It said there was no evidence to suggest that any medical procedures were conducted at the property.

A press release from Will County Sheriff's Office said: "On September 12, 2019 at approximately 3:30pm, the Will County Coroner's Office received a telephone call from an attorney representing the family of Dr. Ulrich Klopfer who passed away on September 3, 2019.

"The attorney informed the Coroner's Office that while going through the doctor's personal property they discovered what appeared to be fetal remains and requested that the Will County Coroner's Office provide proper removal. The Coroner's Office contacted the Will County State's Attorney's Office and the Will County Sheriff's Office regarding the information conveyed by the attorney.

"Will County Sheriff's Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators and representatives from the Will County Coroner's Office arrived at an address in unincorporated Will County. Personnel were directed to an area of the property where 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains were located. The Will County Coroner's Office took possession of the remains."

Klopfer used to operate the Women's Pavilion in South Bend, as well as abortion clinics in Fort Wayne and Gary.

However, according to WNDU, the Indiana Medical Licensing Board voted to suspend Klopfer's medical licence indefinitely back in 2015.

FOX 59 reports that his medical licence was suspended following after accusations that he failed to report an abortion performed on a 13-year-old girl.
