Police in France have finally managed to close down an illegal rave that's been going on since Thursday (31 December).

The rave was held in a warehouse at Lieuron near Rennes in Brittany with more than 2,500 people attending since it kicked off on New Year's Eve.

Police made numerous attempts to close it down, but partygoers turned aggressive and threw bottles and stones at cops as well as setting one of their cars on fire.

Under current coronavirus restrictions in the country, mass gatherings are not allowed and there's a nationwide curfew between 8pm and 6am.

Authorities in France told Sky News people had attended the illegal party from other countries including the UK and Spain.

According to one attendee, the ravers met up at designated spot on Thursday evening (31 December) and then headed to Lieuron.

He said 'very few' of those who went 'respected social distancing and that most didn't wear masks.

Le Monde newspaper was told by one partygoer the event was 'very well organised' and there were even food stalls inside.

Even after the New Year was welcomed in, the party didn't stop - with some people going off to their cars for a sleep and then returning to carry on.

By Friday evening police were in place to prevent any new people from joining the party, but those already in attendance continued to party.

France's Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin was forced to hold a special crisis meeting to discuss the event.

The get together finally began to wind down at around 5.30am local time, the BBC reports, and police were able to start clearing out the warehouse.

Cops handed more than 1,200 fines to the rule breakers.

Some of those who had gone told Sky News they had wanted it to go on longer.

Two people said they took a four hour drive to get there, with one saying: "It brings back good memories! It had been so long since we had done one.

"We hesitated a bit before leaving, but we did well. There was even a fireworks display for the New Year."

Officials have now opened an investigation into the illegal party and have urged anyone who attended to self-isolate for seven days.
