A mother and son have admitted faking her death in an attempt to claim more then £136,000 on life insurance.

Forty-eight-year-old Arafa Nassib and her 18-year-old son Adil Kasim admitted they had attempted to commit fraud against Scottish Widows.

Another man, Yusuf Abdullah, has denied he conspired with the pair to commit fraud.

Two policies were claimed against, one worth £115,267 and the other £21,263, both with Scottish Widows.

The trio, who are all from Walsall, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court where they pleaded guilty to making false representation last year, between March and December.

The false claim stated Nassib had died in Zanzibar, off the coast of mainland Tanzania, East Africa.

The son claimed his mother had died in a car crash, however insurers Scottish Widows began to get suspicious about the documents he sent across, including a death certificate, and refused to pay out the cash.

The firm handed the case over to the City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department in November of last year, and an investigation was launched.

A police spokesperson said last month: "Kasim was arrested by officers on 22 December 2016 and Nassib was arrested on 8 February 2017 when she returned to the country from Canada."

Abdullah has denied the charges against him, which state he was part of a trio with the mother and son, and conspired with them to commit fraud.

Prosecutors now have until 14 June to decide if they are going to proceed with the case against Abdullah.

A sentencing date for the mother and son will also be set on 14 June.
