A shooting in a high school in the United States has left 'multiple victims' dead and injured.

Police are attending the incident at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, after a shooter opened fire with a gun at just after 2pm local time when students were being dismissed from school.

The local sheriff's office has confirmed that the shooter is now in custody although the scene is still active. They have said that there are at least 14 victims.

"There are numerous fatalities. It's a horrific situation. It's just a horrible day for us." Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie told CBS. "We have no evidence at this point there was more than one shooter."

Live video from the scene has shown at least five people being treated at the scene while students were being evacuated from the school. However, there are reports that many more have been shot and injured.

The school is currently on lockdown with armed police at the perimeter of the building. Students were reported to be barricading themselves inside the building in a bid to protect themselves.

NEW: "I evacuated with my friends," student tells CBS News. "Then we heard gunshots. I heard about six gunshots...and then some people started running and we all then started running...we were like, 'this is real -- we are just going to run for our lives'"

Coral Springs Police department has tweeted instructions to teachers and students to remain barricaded indoors until police reach them. The students are being cleared from the school one building at a time.

The Broward County Sherriff's Office has confirmed that it is "working a developing incident" at Stoneman Douglas High School and has advised people to avoid the area.

The FBI also said it was attending the scene and is currently assisting local law enforcement.

Florida's governor, Rick Scott, said that he has spoken with US President Donald Trump about the shooting.

Trump has tweeted his 'prayers and condolences' to the families of the victims of the shooting.

The White House deputy press secretary has issued a statement saying it is monitoring the situation.

Majory Stoneman Douglas High School is the only public high school located in the city of Parkland, Florida - west of nearby Boca Raton.

In 2015, Newsweek ranked Douglas as the 358th best high school in the nation and 13th best in Florida, the highest ranking of any school in Broward County.
