A mum has been arrested after a video of a baby purportedly smoking cannabis went viral.

Two clips appeared on Facebook which showed an adult's hand holding a cigarette up to the little girl's mouth and were quickly inundated with comments from horrified viewers who couldn't believe what they were seeing.

Many people wrote to say they had reported the clip, which has since been deleted, to police in Raleigh, North Carolina, where the videos were believed to be filmed.

As a result, Raleigh police were able to track down Brianna Ashanti Lofton, 20, who now faces charges of child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and possession of marijuana.

In a Facebook post, Raleigh Police Department wrote: "Big thanks to everyone who posted information about the smoking mother and baby.

"Thanks to your willingness to get involved, the child is now safe and the mother is in police custody."

The RPD post has been 'liked' over 3,000 times and has been flooded with comments from people thanking the police for their hard work and passing on their well-wishes to the little girl.

Police have said the incident took place on 1 December 2017, but the video went viral recently after being shared by residents who live in Raleigh - it has since been viewed over one million times.

Lieutenant Jason Hodge told ABC: "We appreciate the public's help in this matter.

"We welcome and encourage any assistance the public is willing to give us at all times."

The little girl, who is reported to be one, is now being cared for Wake County Child Protective Services.
