A US mum is devastated after photos surfaced of smirking police officers posing with her dead son.

Omar Rahman was found dead at a property in St Louis in August of this year and his heart-broken mother, Kim Stanton, claims that since his death the police have been very quiet about what actually happened.

She has since been made aware of the photographs which appear to show a cop from the North County Police Cooperative, in uniform, posing with his thumb up next to the body.

Speaking to KMOV, Kim said: "I really don't know, actually, what happened to my son.

"When they come to a call, they're supposed to be there to help and protect, not doing what he was doing with thumbs up and a smirk on his face."

She has since hired an attorney, Antonio Romanucci, who is also appalled with what the photos purport to show. He told the station that during his years as an attorney he has seen 'thousands and thousands' of forensic photographs but never anything as shocking as this 'staged' image.

Kim and her attorney are appealing with North County Police Cooperative to carry out a full, independent investigation to get to the bottom of what happened.

The cop in the photo has had his identity kept hidden because, as yet, he has not been found guilty of any wrong-doing.
