A mum says she found out the little girl she had raised for more than 10 years had been swapped at birth. To make the story even more tragic, the mum only found out when the girl she raised was murdered after she was reportedly sexually abused by the woman's husband and his brother.
Police say they have finally been able to solve the 2011 murder of 10-year-old Yana Alexandrova and have arrested her stepdad's brother 55-year-old Oleg Akhtiyainen.
It has since transpired she had been sexually abused by her stepdad for years.
Detectives in Russia have said Yana's older sister Alina, 21, had also suffered years of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepdad Yury K.
Yury has now been sentenced to 13 years for the attacks.
Yana's body was found dumped in a forest in Russia and was identified by her clothes.
However, a subsequent DNA test showed that Yana and her mum Elena Alexandrova were not biologically related and an investigation was launched into how that could be.
Police have since established that when Yana was a baby, a mix-up in the hospital meant she went home with the wrong person.
Elena's biological daughter has since been found and is being raised by a loving family who were also completely unaware of the swap.
Elena has been told she cannot see the girl until she is 18 and is not contesting the decision as she doesn't want to cause 'distress' to the girl, according to a friend.
Elena remembers the woman who is raising her biological child, as they were placed near each other in the hospital.
She said: "There were three of us in the ward, from different villages.
"We were chatting. Everything was normal."
Elena said she was 'shocked and unaware' of the sexual abuse her husband carried out against her daughters.
Cops have said Yury was originally a suspect in Yana's killing but after a 'in-depth investigation' they believe Akhtiyainen is the culprit.
Akhtiyainen has been told he faces a life sentence for the rape and murder of Yana.
