An American mum has been hailed a hero after diving in front of her son to save him from a crossbow attack.

Janet Partain feels lucky to be alive after copping a massive bow through the side of her face. Despite the injury looking horrific, the 34-year-old was able to drive herself to hospital.

The mum arrived at the home of Joseph Avellino in the afternoon with her son and two nephews enquiring about a theft, according to the Daily Mail.

She's told WREG what happened next: "I told him, Joseph I don't want you on my property no more, this and that. And he was like, 'Well I'm going to shoot ya'll'.

"[He] was pointing the arrow at them and he fired a shot at one of them, and I pushed them out the way and I got hit.

It left a massive hole in her face.

"I think I was in shock because once I got hit I said, 'I can't believe you almost shot that kid'."

Avellino has been charged with battery in the first degree and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

It was certainly an interesting scene for first responders when Ms Partain walked through the hospital doors with a giant arrow casually lodged in her face.

Cross County Sheriff's Office Captain Jeff Nichols also told WREG: "It was an odd sight to see someone with an arrow in their face and they're still conscious and talking to me."

Photos uploaded to Janet's Facebook have been flooded with comments from people who think she's a hero.

She's simply replied to one person, saying: "When I said I would take a bullet or whatever for my kids!! I meant that!! And I did just that!"
