When Aussie artist Scott Marsh painted a mural of Scott Morrison onto a wall in Sydney, there wasn't much behind it.

It was just meant to be a tongue-in-cheek painting in Chippendale to highlight the fact the Prime Minister went to Hawaii with his family while the country was on fire.

Mr Marsh announced that he was going to sell some limited t-shirts with the same mural on it, with the proceeds going to New South Wales Rural Fire Service.

Well, he's been absolutely blown away by the response to the campaign.

Scott Marsh has revealed that more than $50,000 has been raised from the t-shirt sales alone, with more than 1,000 prints being sold since last week.

He told AAP when the mural was first painted: "Heading out to Hawaii when the country is literally on fire is probably not a really great move in terms of leadership. I think public sentiment around that is all pretty unified."

Mr Marsh will close the sales on January 3 and tally up how much will officially be sent to the firefighters.

The much needed money will help the RFS update some of its equipment, with reports coming from across the state that many firefighters have been crowdfunding to buy things like smoke masks.

A few days after the mural was painted, Scott Marsh uploaded a series of photos showing a disgruntled person painting over it.

Many speculated whether the man was with the local council and just doing his job for graffiti control, if he was the owner of the home the mural was attached to or if it was someone upset at the depiction of the Prime Minister in that way.

Scott Morrison defended his decision to head to Hawaii for a couple of days, saying that he had made a promise to his kids and he didn't want to let them down.
