North Korea claims to have successfully carried out its first hydrogen bomb test.
The announcement came after a 5.1 magnitude quake was detected close to its nuclear test site at Punggye-ri.
A state television news reader confirmed the test was 'successfully performed' this morning.
“The republic’s first hydrogen bomb test has been successfully performed at 10:00am on January 6, 2016, based on the strategic determination of the Workers’ Party,” they said.
According to reports, the country claim to have tested a hydrogen nuclear bomb which is more powerful than an atomic bomb. However, international experts say there is no confirmation as yet.
The US vowed to 'respond appropriately' to any and all North Korean provocations.
“We will continue to protect and defend our allies in the region, including the Republic of Korea, and will respond appropriately to any and all North Korean provocations,” State Department Spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.
