Police shut down an illegal rave after hundreds of people packed into a forest in east London.

Officers raced down to the wooded area next to the A406 North Circular Road after receiving reports from residents that loud music was being played.

Eight noise complaints were received by police as residents' sleep was broken in the early hours of the morning.

Some locals also reported seeing a number of drunk people walking along the busy road.

According to reports, when they arrived at Walthamstow Forest, they were met by more than 500 revellers dancing in the early hours of Sunday (9 August) morning.

Photos have since been shared showing a large crowd of young people huddled together in front of a DJ who is stood behind a set of decks.

Speaking to The Mirror, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed that police attended the scene but that no arrests were made.

More than 500 people allegedly attended the illegal rave.

In a statement, the Met said: "Police were called at 12.43am on Sunday, 9 August to reports of a large group of people gathered at an unlicensed music event (UME) in Walthamstow Forest.

"Officers attended.

"Those in attendance were dispersed by 3.19am. There were no arrests.

"UMEs are illegal, have no security, are not insured, are not ticketed and they are frequently associated with anti-social behaviour and violence. Those attending a UME are putting themselves at risk.

"As soon as police receive information on a UME, officers we will work with organisers and local authorities to shut down events at the earliest opportunity.

"If organisers fail to comply, police will use legislation to seize sound systems and laptops. Legislation is also used to disperse crowds and ultimately make arrests if people fail to comply."

Last month, two officers were injured as police were called to shut down an illegal rave in London before being pelted with bottles.

Police received numerous calls after 11pm on Friday in relation to a rave in Woodberry Down Estate in Hackney, with residents complaining of noise and anti-social behaviour.

Upon the arrival of police, crowds became hostile and riot police were called in to help disperse the gathering. As footage from the scene shows, the crowd only became more violent, with bottles, canisters and a bicycle thrown at police.

Two officers were injured, with one taken to hospital with bruised ribs and another completing their shift with an injured leg.

An 18-year-old man was arrested for violent disorder and obstruction, and a 19-year-old man was arrested for obstruction.

The area was cleared by around 4am
