A man riding a New York Subway train made a citizen's arrest after filming a woman who launched into a racist rant against another passenger, also lashing out and hitting her with an umbrella.

WARNING: SENSITIVE CONTENT

The woman, who police have named as 40-year-old Anna Lushchinskaya, was arrested shortly after the incident in Brooklyn.

Juan Ayala, who filmed the incident, eventually made a citizen's arrest after she turned on him, and held Lushchinskaya until police arrived to take her into custody.

It is not yet known what prompted Lushchinskaya to lash out at the unnamed woman, repeatedly screaming at her 'fuck off', slapping her hand, hacking her with her umbrella and kicking her.

While someone tried to grab the umbrella from her, telling her, "You're going to make us all late for work, bitch," Lushchinskaya continued to attack the woman, and even called her a 'fucking c**nk'.

Speaking to ABC's Eyewitness News, the victim - who wanted to stay anonymous - said: "I'm lucky that she didn't have anything like weapons on her - like knife, gun - because it could have got a lot worse."

She continued: "I'm lucky that people were on the train who were helping me, especially the first Asian guy who stood in front of me right away because he wasn't recording.

"He just stood in front of me to help me, because I know other people were recording, but their recording didn't do anything until later on when it escalated."

Also speaking to ABC, Ayala said: "Everybody was just looking at each other like, 'Are you sure you just heard that? Did you just hear that?'"

He said he felt worried for the victim, who reportedly suffered lacerations to her face, adding: "It's something that can almost be traumatising, honestly. It's not a situation that anybody should be involved in, especially a little girl."

Ayala also got scratched in the incident.

After Ayala stepped in, Lushchinskaya was apprehended at 36th Street and placed under arrest.

According to a criminal complaint from earlier this year, Lushchinskaya was charged in June in connection with another scuffle, where she allegedly pepper-sprayed a man on the train at the 36th Street station.
