A pensioner called the government 'stupid' and says she is 'happy to die from coronavirus for a day at the beach'.

The pensioner in question - named Chris - was a caller on Radio Solent on Monday (23 March) when she started her tirade about the unnecessary worry surrounding the ongoing pandemic.

But despite the elderly being among the most at risk from the deadly disease, the 75-year-old told presenter Pat Sissons that last weekend she'd enjoyed a shopping trip, went to the beach, and even popped over to see her 78-year-old friend.

The caller began, asking: "You're a strapping, great, young man, why are you so worried about this virus? I can't believe it."

Pat replied: "Because if I get it, I'll pass it onto other people."

Chris then added: "Well, that's too bad, isn't it, because I don't care... I don't care whether we have a lockdown or not - I hope we don't, because regardless of that, if you're going to get it, you'll get it anyway."

The angry caller said the government is 'stupid'.

Despite her claims being branded 'nonsense' by the presenter, Chris said she and others were sick of being inside their homes, saying: "People have been cooped up indoors all winter and we had the most glorious weekend weather for ages, and you want to stop people from getting out?"

Pat then asked Chris how she had spent her weekend - and this is where the pair really butted heads.

She explained: "Well, I went shopping on Saturday, to Asda, then I went to Stokes Bay and had a walk along the front and sat on the beach for a while because it was so beautiful - unfortunately my husband couldn't come with me.

"Yesterday we went to the cemetery to put flowers on our mothers' graves, then we called in to see a friend... "

After finding out that this friend was three years older than Chris, Pat was done.

Chris said she was 'willing to die for a day at the beach'.

Scolding his caller, he said: "You are irresponsible, you are irresponsible. I am not causing panic, this is the government advice you are flouting."

Jumping back in, Chris sniped: "The government are stupid. Boris Johnson? I won't even go there."

Pat then added: "I sincerely hope you are wrong, but if you went around all those places, where we know people are not staying apart, and then you went to see your 78-year-old friend, you are irresponsible."

Chris hit back at Pat for being a 'frightened man', to which the disk jockey replied: "Because I don't want to pass this on, I don't wanna get it and I don't wanna pass it on."

By this point, Pat had had quite enough of the heated exchange and reminded Chris that though he may survive the disease, she and her pal might not.

Before hanging up on the pensioner, he asked: "So you're happy to die for a day at the beach?"

To which Chris replies: "Yeah."

Don't be like Chris.
