Two people have been jailed for leaking pictures of the body of late footballer Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane crash earlier this year.

They were jailed for 14 months and five months respectively, having admitted three counts of computer misuse when they appeared at Swindon crown court in August.

In a victim statement read out last week, Emiliano Sala's sister Romina said the harrowing photos had been 'hard' to see.

She said: "I have seen photos of Emiliano's body leaked on Instagram, and I cannot believe there are people so wicked and evil who could do that.

"I phoned Emiliano's agent and told him what was circulating on the internet. I called our brother, Dario, and he did not want to see the photos.

"I tried to keep images off social networks. My mother could not see those horrible photos.

"I was sad as people were making jokes about it. I'll never erase the images from my head. My brother and mother can never forget about this.

"It's hard for me to live with this image."

Sala and the plane's pilot David Ibbotson lost contact with Air Traffic Control north of Guernsey when flying from Nantes to Cardiff on Monday 21 January 2019.

Sala had been was on his way to meet new teammates at Cardiff after signing a £15 million ($18.6m) transfer deal from the French club.

Their plane was eventually found in early February.

Dorset Police released a statement following Sala's identification, saying: "The families of Mr Sala and the pilot David Ibbotson have been updated with this news and will continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.

"HM Coroner will continue to investigate the circumstances of this death supported by Dorset Police.

"On Monday 21 January 2019 a plane carrying both men was flying from Nantes to Cardiff when it lost contact with Air Traffic Control, north of Guernsey."

In the hours since the tragic news was revealed, Romina posted a heartbreaking tribute to her brother.

The post on Instagram showed Sala standing with his arms wide open with what appears to be the Nantes Stadium in France behind him.

Her caption, which was written in Spanish, read: "Your soul in my soul, it will shine forever, thus illuminating the time of my existence.

"I love you, Tito."
