A plane carrying 184 passengers and seven crew members has crashed in India.

The Air India Express plane is reported to have skidded off the runway at Calicut International airport in Kozhikode in Kerala.




Emergency services are at the scene and a major rescue operation is under way.

A police official said at least two people are feared dead and 35 injured.


The plane was coming into Calicut International airport, also known as Karipur airport, from Dubai, but crashed at around 7pm local time (2.30pm BST) amid heavy rainfall in the region.

Pictures from the scene appear to show the plane split in two.

Air India said in a statement: "Air India Express flight IX 1344 operated by B737 aircraft from Dubai to Calicut overshot runway at Kozhikode at 19:41 hrs tonight.

"No fire reported at the time of landing. There are 174 passengers, 10 Infants, two Pilots and five cabin crew on board the aircraft.

"As per the initial reports rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care. We will soon share the update in this regard."
