Police in Utah pulled over a car only to find a five-year-old boy behind the wheel, who informed them he was on his way to buy a Lamborghini.

A Utah Highway Patrol officer said he decided to stop the car on the southbound 15 Freeway after thinking the driver may have been drunk or experiencing some sort of medical emergency, but was shocked to see a youngster in the driving seat.

The trooper told a news conference: "I hit my siren and the car did immediately pull over the left. I approached the vehicle and I was expecting to find somebody who needed an ambulance or paramedics.

"And it was pretty clear when the window came down that it was a young, very underage driver."

The kid, who was sat right on the very edge of the seat so his little legs could reach the pedals, began to cry when he saw the cop.

In footage caught by a dashcam, Trooper Rick Morgan can be seen asking: "How old are you? You're five years old? Wow... Where did you learn to drive a car?"

The boy then told the trooper he had taken the family's SUV after his mum told him she wouldn't buy him a Lamborghini. He went on to say he was planning on driving to his sister's house in California before heading out to try and find a dealership where he was willing to splash his $3 life savings on the brand-new car.

A flawless plan? Cops didn't think so. His parents were called to come and collect their son and their car before heading home.

On Twitter, the Utah Highway Patrol posted: "One of our Troopers in Weber Co. initiated a traffic stop on what he thought was an impaired driver. Turns out it was this young man, age 5, somehow made his way up onto the freeway in his parents' car. Made it from 17th and Lincoln in Ogden down to the 25th St off-ramp SB I-15."

Morgan says no one was injured in the incident and it was now up to prosecutors to decide if they were going to press charges against the boy's parents, who had left the boy in his sibling's care while they were out.
