Policeman Reveals Top Distance Speed Camera Vans Can Catch People Out

It’s a lot further than you might think.

A police officer has revealed the distance mobile speed vans can catch people out - and it's a lot further than you might think.

Obviously the role of these vehicles is to improve road safety and prevent accidents and the best way to avoid getting a ticket is to just drive within the speed limit.

But people do slip up and not knowing whether you've been caught by one of these vans is something a lot of drivers have experienced.

A video shared on TikTok page @georgescarmedia shows Sgt Owen Messenger opening up about just how far these speed camera vans can reach.

Standing in front of the vehicle, Sgt Messenger says: "I bet you didn't know that this speed camera van can get you from around about a thousand metres away.

"So if you've got a friend who needs to slow down maybe you should be sharing this video to let them know the capabilities of this van.

"Because if it's seen you, it's probably too late."

Now if you're wondering how fast you can go before you get flashed, a speed camera officer has revealed everything you need to know.

Gareth Thomas, a Go Safe speed reduction officer in North Wales, explained you won't get a ticket provided your speed doesn't exceed the limit by more than 10 percent.

He said: "So for example, travelling at 35mph or above in a 30mph zone will be recorded as a speeding offence."

However, Gareth does point out that thresholds vary and can change without notice.

After all, any speeding offence officially occurs at 1mph above the limit, but most forces will allow a variance.

The ex-police officer continued by saying that contrary to popular belief, the speed vans he works in do not need to be visible.

That said, mobile speed camera operatives will often park up in clear view of motorists to act as a deterrent.

If you're wondering about whether it's okay to eat while you're driving, the answer is yes - unless it's distracting, in which case you could get done for careless driving.

He added: "It is endorsable. I had one lady in view once and she was looking in the mirror and putting lipstick on.

"She was riding on the cat's eyes in the centre of the road and veering. I recommended that she was prosecuted for driving without due care and attention."

Gareth also explained that for anyone who does get caught speeding, the minimum penalty is a £100 fine - but in some circumstances, police may offer the option of attending a speed awareness course.

"An accredited course is far more likely to improve driver behaviour and consequently make our roads safer," he concluded.
