A prankster who was filmed licking a tub of ice cream in Walmart before returning it to the shelf has pleaded guilty to public mischief.

D'Adrien Anderson, 24, admitted to the crime on Thursday after he posted the 20 second clip on social media five months ago of himself stood in a Walmart in Port Arthur, Texas.

According to the MailOnline, CCTV showed that he later bought the tub of ice cream but the Walmart was forced to throw out all of its Blue Bell ice cream as a precaution.

Anderson could face a year in jail.

It is believed he could now face up to a year behind bars and a $4,000 (£3,000) fine but has pleaded for leniency - asking the judge for probation.

The video that Anderson posted - alongside the caption 'Happy national soft ice cream day lmao' - has got 160,000 views up to now with nearly 2,000 comments and 2,200 shares in total.

Anderson was taking part in a viral trend from last year where people licked Blue Bell ice cream before placing them back on grocery store freezers.

Earlier last year, a video emerged that showed a woman taking the lid off a tub of the ice cream, licking it and putting it back on the shelf.

The person filming the clip can be heard encouraging the woman to commit the heinous act, which proves that a) people will do anything for a small amount of attention these days and b) people are idiots.

The video was viewed more than 8 million times on Twitter, and - as you might expect - a lot of the feedback that it has garnered has not been overwhelmingly positive.

In response to the video, Blue Bell Creameries released a statement that reads: "We want to thank our consumers for alerting us to the recent food tampering incident. We take this issue very seriously and are currently working with law enforcement, retail partners and social media platforms. This type of incident will not be tolerated.

"Food safety is a top priority, and we work hard to provide a safe product and maintain the highest level of confidence from our consumers.

"During production, our half gallons are flipped upside down and sent to a hardening room where the ice cream freezes to the lid creating a natural seal.

"The lids are frozen tightly to the carton. Any attempt at opening the product should be noticeable. We will continue to monitor this situation."
