Ten people are dead after two trains were involved in a head-on collision in southern Italy.

The four car trains collided near the town of Andria in Puglia province, the Daily Mail reports.

It's a single track line, so it's thought that the crash may be due to either a driver error or a signalling fault.

A photo of the scene broadcast on local TV shows the devastation caused with the crumple cars lying off the track at sharp angle.

News reports said that rescue workers were pulling victims from the crash, including a child, who was found alive.

Matteo Renzi, the Prime Minister of Italy, said the crash was a 'moment of tears' and he has vowed to not stop until they find the cause of the terrible incident.
