Thirteen schoolchildren have been injured and a six-year-old is struggling for his life after a bus tipped over in a crash in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the US.

Police are still looking for the driver of the vehicle who caused a pile up of a tractor-trailer, an escort vehicle for the tractor-trailer, the missing car and the school bus. It is not reported if the drivers and the passengers in the other vehicles were injured or taken to hospital.

The missing automobile hit the escort vehicle, causing it to go into another lane and eventually tip over the school bus. A student was trapped underneath the bus and was helicoptered to hospital as soon as possible.

All 16 people on the bus were treated at hospital but only two remain in hospital. A 16-year-old boy is expected to be released today but a six-year-old boy remains in hospital.

While the patient had 'some improvement', Lancaster County District Attorney's Office spokesman, Brett Hambright, said this morning the boy is still 'struggling for his life'.

The police are still searching for the vehicle which caused the crash as it fled from the scene. The missing car is reported to be a light-coloured sedan, or a white Chevrolet Malibu, Hambright said. The vehicle will also have considerable damage on the bonnet, where it hit the first car.

The police have many questions for the driver and urge him to come forward.
