A son who was attending his mother's funeral was shocked to find another person altogether dressed up in her clothes and wearing her jewellery in the casket because of a mix-up at the funeral home.
As if it wasn't a difficult enough time for Dr Jerry Bowman anyway, he arrived at the Alexander Funeral Home in Charlotte, North Carolina, to discover that the woman in the coffin wasn't his recently deceased mum Catherine White.
The woman who was in the casket was actually 91-year-old Elease McInnis, a completely unrelated woman who happened to die in the US city the day before.
So, both women had been taken to the funeral home so their bodies could be prepared for burial, but the staff got it wrong with disastrous effect and mixed up Ms McInnis with 75-year-old Ms White.
It gets worse, too.
On 2 July, the relatives of Ms McInnis then mistakenly laid Ms White to rest in a separate ceremony, intended for the other woman.
A relative reportedly said some of McInnis' family noticed she looked a bit different to usual - without suspecting that she could be a woman more than 15 years younger - but put it down to the embalming process.
The family member said they were 'embarrassed and heartbroken' by the mistake.
Ms White passed away on 26 June as a result of terminal cancer, for which Dr Bowman had been her full-time carer.
Naturally, he was appalled by the mix-up. Well, you would be, wouldn't you?
He said: "I knew what she looked like the minute she left my home at 1.11am on 26 June this year."
He added: "She doesn't deserve this. Nobody deserves anything like this."
In order to go some way to rectifying this horrendous error, Ms White's body will now have to be exhumed from York Memorial Park with the blessing of the McInnis family.
That will allow for both women to be buried in their correct fashion, and - perhaps most importantly of all - in the correct graves after a service during which their family can say their proper goodbyes.
