The step-mum of one of the teenage boys who was photographed posing with his friends after throwing flour and eggs at a disabled woman has spoken out to say the boy is 'not a tear-away'.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the woman called the 17-year-old a 'stupid boy' and said he hasn't been in trouble before.

The teen, who can't be named for legal reasons, was arrested alongside another 17-year-old and two 15-year olds, after a photo emerged of them posing behind a woman who is covered in flour and eggs, cowering on a park bench. They have since been released on bail, police have said.

Now the step-mum has spoken out following the incident, telling the Daily Mail: "He got caught up in it all, it was a stupid thing to do.

"He's never been in any major bother before, but this is serious. His dad won't say anything about it because the police have asked him not to but he's upset.

"I don't know why the lad got involved. As far as I know he just took the photo. I don't know anything about him throwing the eggs and flour.

"But he should have had nothing to do with it in the first place. He's not a tear-away, though, he's just been a stupid boy."

The incident, which took place in Bury St Edmunds, came to light when the boys shared the image on social media.

Anthony Bridgland, an inspector with Suffolk Police told the Mirror: "This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we are treating the matter seriously.

"We know this incident may have caused concern and anger both in the local community and online, but we would like to reassure everyone that we are tackling the matter robustly and supporting the victim."

A woman who says she is a friend of the victim said she is 'safe' but that she 'needs her privacy'. She went on to thank people for their kindness, but added that it was overwhelming.

On Facebook, she wrote: "She cannot cope with people popping in, or gifts. It's complicated but if you want to help, how about donating to a mental health charity as people with these unseen illnesses go under the radar all the time and they are totally under-funded.

"Then maybe she will get the real help she needs from qualified people. You're all very kind."
