Storm Ali, which is due to batter the UK and Ireland with high winds over the next few days, has caused the death of a woman after a caravan was blown off a cliff in Ireland.

Police have confirmed that the unidentified woman, thought to be in her 50s, was killed after the gusts of around 90mph blew a caravan over the side of a cliff while she was inside.

The incident took place near Clifden, County Galway, reports RTÉ.

A spokesperson for the Gardaí (Irish Police) said: "Gardaí at Clifden Co Galway are investigating an incident which occurred at Claddaghduff, Co Galway this morning.

"At approximately 7.45am a report was received that a caravan had blown off the cliff at the above location.

"A search was carried out on the beach and after a short time the body of a female in her 50s was recovered.

Storm Ali is expected to continue bringing strong winds to the UK and Ireland for the next few days. In Britain, the Met Office have issued several warnings, including warnings of potential danger to life.

An amber warning is in place for Northern Ireland, the north of England, and southern Scotland.

There have been reports of the strong winds damaging property, with debris becoming airborne. There are also fears that the storm could cause damage to power and transport services.

Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge told the Sun: "The strong winds have only started to arrive.

"We are mostly concerned for the central belt of Scotland where the winds will become increasingly westerly and winds are expected to funnel through low lying valleys.

"There could be significant disruptions through that area due to the large number of bridges.

"The winds will hit at the end of the afternoon, the main commuting time, so restrictions will be put in place."

So far, a wind speed of 87mph has been recorded at Mace Head, Ireland. The winds are expected to grow in strength over the course of the day.

There could be more extensive damaged caused as a result of this being one of the first storms of the autumn. As there are many trees still in leaf, the winds have a greater effect.

Partridge continued: "We will see a number of trees and branches brought down - the winds have a stronger effect on the trees when they are in leaf."

Ali is the first named storm of 2018, as Storm Helene, which arrived late last week, had already been named before it arrived in Britain and Ireland.
