Surfer Is Engulfed By Huge Wave After Coming Off His Board

Worse things happen at sea. Oh wait...

Video footage has surfaced that shows a surfer getting absolutely annihilated by a huge wave off the coast of Portugal.

Now, Nazaré in Portugal is known for its surf. People from all around the globe travel to the Atlantic coast to sample it's huge waves as well as - if they know what's good for them - it's delightful food and beer options.

Well, Marcelo Luna was out on the swell catching some waves, when he tried to board his mate's jet ski to get out but was blindsided by a bloody great wave - sort of an occupational hazard of being a surfer, you'd have to imagine.

The video was shot near Nazaré's Praia Do Norte - that's North Beach to you and me - and shows Luna exhibiting some pretty mad surfing skills. Once his wave is gone though, a pal arrives on a jet ski to take him either to shore, or back out beyond the huge waves.

It's not clear which one, because he ever gets the chance.

Another big bastard wave arrives and crashes him into the water. He'll be blowing sea salt out of his nose for weeks.

It's not exactly like they couldn't have foreseen this. As previously mentioned, that particular part of the world is renowned for its big wave surfing. In fact, the world record was set there back in 2011.

On that occasion Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara caught a wave that was 24m (that's 78 feet) tall. Mad bastards, the lot of them.

It's dangerous work, big wave surfing. Marcelo had a chat afterwards and said that he knows how lucky he is not to be dead.

He told the filmmakers from Nazaré Dispatch about what it's like to get absolutely battered by a huge wall of water all day, every day.

He said: "I realised that I almost died

"One more wave, maybe, and I think I would be knocked out. It was hardcore... it was the worst situation I've ever experienced in Nazaré, I'm blessed to be alive"

He's no amateur at this, either. Marcelo has been out there catching these waves in Nazaré since 2016. As it happens, he's one of the most experienced and most active big wave surfers in that part of the world.

It just goes to show that no matter how experienced you are, and how much you think you know, you can always get caught out by the awesome power of the sea.
