A Sydney nurse has been taken into custody accused of trying to smother a patient to death with a pillow.

Police were called to Bankstown Hospital yesterday (June 25) on reports a patient had been assaulted during the night shift.

After doing a bit of digging, detectives seized a number of items, which will be forensically looked at for the investigation.

A New South Wales Police statement has been released, stating: "Following inquiries, police arrested a 50-year-old man when he arrived at the hospital about 4pm.

"He was taken to Bankstown Police Station, where he was charged with attempt to strangle/suffocate with intent to murder, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

"Police will allege in court that the man pushed a pillow into the face of an 80-year-old man and forcibly held him down before another a staff member intervened.

During the struggle, the elderly patient suffered a cut to his arm and his health is still being monitored.

The suspect was refused bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court today (June 26).
