Tech Glitch At Lindt Factory Causes It To Snow Chocolate In Swiss Town

Fine particles of cocoa powder have snowed down on to a Swiss town, after a chocolate factory's ventilation system malfunctioned.

Residents in Olten, which is between Zurich and Basel, were treated to a shower of roasted cocoa nibs after a cooling vent at The Lindt & Spruengli company developed a defect.

Cocoa nibs are fragments of crushed cocoa beans and form the basis of chocolate.

Cars had a fine coating of cocoa

Thanks to strong winds in the area in Friday morning, the powder was blown around the area outside the chocolate factory leaving everything coated in a fine dusting of cocoa.

According to the company, a car was left lightly coated and it has offered to pay for the costs of any cleaning. It says that it is yet to be taken up on the offer.

Production in the factory carried on as normal and the company assures the public that the particles were harmless to people or the environment.

The ventilation system has now been fixed.

The famous chocolatier may well have been making one of its new lines when the delicious accident took place, which may have included Lindt's new chocolate cereal balls.

The new Lindt Crispy Sensations are said to have an 'enchantingly crispy' centre draped in a layer of the finest milk chocolate.

What's better is that they're available now but are being sold exclusively from Lindt Chocolate shops and on its website for £3.50 per 140g bag.

Lindt has also been busy developing a new vegan range. In some good news for the plant-based crew, the company has announced it's launching a new range of vegan chocolate bars made with oat milk.

According to reports, the 'Hello' bars will initially launch in Germany, but hopefully they'll prove popular enough to roll out elsewhere.

Retailing at €2.99 (£2.70/$3.39), they will also boast fully recyclable packaging, and will come in three flavours: hazelnut, salted caramel and cookie.

They're set to his stores this November, meaning those on a vegan diet or trying to cut down on their dairy intake will be able to live how the other half live by gorging on creamy Lindt chocolate throughout the Christmas period.

In the meantime, an FAQ section on the Lindt website reminds people that it still has some other products that are vegan-friendly, including some of its dark chocolate bars.
