Ten activists have been arrested after they staged a protest on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Three managed to abseil down the bridge and held signs about climate change action - urging the Prime Minister to ensure the country is doing its bit to tackle the issue.

One sign said '100% renewables' while another read 'Make Coal History'.

New South Wales Police have released a statement saying: "About 5.15am, security staff operating on the Sydney Harbour Bridge observed several people on the bridge.

"A number of people were detained by security personnel, but others were able to climb under the structure.

"Police from Sydney City Police Area Command attended and were assisted by officer from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, Marine Area Command and PolAir in removing protestors from beneath the bridge.

"Ten people have so far been arrested and conveyed to Day Street and Surry Hills Police Stations to assist with inquiries."

The three Greenpeace activists who managed to hang underneath the iconic bridge are described as 'specialist trained climbers' by the organisation.

Greenpeace Australia Pacific chief executive David Ritter hopes the protest will be recognised by the main political parties.

"Rural and regional Australian families have borne the brunt of climate impacts so far in this country," he said.

"Burning coal is the number one cause of climate change in Australia - we're here to say 'no more'.

"Climate damage is happening right now. Australia is facing a climate emergency right now. Our political leaders must listen to those already affected by climate disaster and act.

"Climate change is also contributing to the global nature crisis - with scientists now warning that up to one million species are facing extinction. But we are also here in the spirit of hope.We have the solutions and it is not too late to change course, to a flourishing future powered by clean energy."

The protest caused some minor delays while police arrested the group and attempted to rescue the ones dangling off the edge.
