The famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco has been 'singing' due to some recent renovations to its cycle-path railings.

Residents have shared clips of the bizarre sounds, with some comparing it to an alien invasion, others complained that the noise could be heard from inside their homes even many miles away from the bridge - not ideal.

Sharing a clip of the noise on Twitter, one resident wrote: "Can someone explain me why this eerie sound has been going on for an hour?"

A second posted: "Extremely 2020: the new railings on the Golden Gate Bridge produce a constant, ominous hum in high winds that is audible for miles."

While a third person joked: "The Golden Gate Bridge learned how to scream which is perfect for 2020."

Not everyone hates it, though, one resident added:"I would also mention that up close and with no people around, the sound was both surreal and peaceful, as if someone's playing a very sad meditation song on surround sound. P.S. you really can't hear it much ON the Golden Gate Bridge itself."

Now, while it sounds pretty creepy, it has a perfectly mundane explanation - the noise is caused by the newly fitted railing slats that are covering the edges of the bridge, which are designed to combat wind resistance, but when wind does hit them this noise is created. Science.

Officials from the city's quality of life authority, SF311, tweeted to clear up the mysterious sound, posting: "Sorry this is happening. The Golden Gate Bridge sargent reports the low humming noise is related to high winds blowing through the newly installed railing slats along the bike path on the bridge."

Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz, a spokesman for the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, told The San Francisco Chronicle that the weird noises 'were a known and inevitable part of a wind retrofit project'.

And officials have since tweeted to admit that they were 'not sure what the plan is to fix the issue'.

So, it seems for now this eerie noise is just the background music for those living in San Francisco - sorry guys.
