Captain Tom Moore will be in for a very large day today as he celebrates his 100th birthday.

The veteran has been welcomed into the 100 club with much fanfare and has even been given a special honour from the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II has promoted Captain Tom Moore to an honorary colonel to mark his big day, according to the Guardian.

The 100-year-old legend will become the figurehead for the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, a program that helps train 16 and 17-year-olds.

The Second World War fighter became an international icon after raising nearly £30 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps in his backyard in Bedfordshire before his big birthday.

In addition to the new title, Captain-now-Colonel Tom will be honoured with a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the BBMF fleet, which includes six Spitfires and a Lancaster bomber, is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, and will pass over Tom's home in salute to his incredible fundraising efforts.

A spokesperson from the MoD said that 'weather permitting' they'd like to 'celebrate Captain Tom's birthday and mark his amazing fundraising achievement'.

He continued: "The great British public is encouraged to follow Captain Tom's disciplined example and not gather to watch the flypast but continue following PHE (Public Health England) guidelines on social distancing."

The British public has also helped mark the big guy turning 100 by sending in thousands upon thousands of birthday cards.

More than 125,000 birthday cards have been sent for Moore, who also recently became the oldest person to achieve a UK number one single with a version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' performed with Michael Ball.

Among those to send greetings cards are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, England football captain Harry Kane, and Dame Kelly Holmes.

The cards have been set up and completely fill up the hall at Bedford School, near to Tom's home in Marston Moretaine.

Mr Moore says he's been incredibly humbled by all the effort people have gone into to celebrate his milestone birthday.

He said: "I continue to be offered lots of lovely items.

"I really do have everything I need but others are struggling due to Covid-19 so, rather than giving to me, please look to donate these generous offers to a local care home or someone in your community. Thank you."

No, thank you Colonel Tom. Has a nice ring to it.
