There's A Scientific Reason Why Everyone Is So Tired At The Moment

No, it's not just you who's been tired and cranky lately

Is every single person you know moaning about how exhausted they are? I mean, I know it's a very British trait anyway - but seriously, why the f*** are we SO TIRED?

Well, you may not have known it but the tiredness - and subsequent crankiness - you're feeling is actually backed by science. That's right. If your boss/colleagues/mates try to act like you're just being dramatic, you can come right back at them with some cold, hard facts.

After hearing the majority of the LADbible office have a moan about their fatigue over the last few weeks, we thought we'd do a bit of digging. It turns out loads of you have been thinking the same thing:

We thought we'd have a little look into why this should be the case, and got in touch with a sleep expert. No, that isn't a made-up job title; it's an actual thing.

According to James Wilson, aka The Sleep Geek, it's a combination of things that gives us that tired, irritable feeling.

Speaking to LADbible, he said: "As the nights draw in and the days get shorter, more and more people find themselves feeling lethargic during the day and not feeling as well-rested. The issues impacting on our sleep, and how energised we feel during the day change as we move into autumn and winter.

"The biggest impact on our mood is the lack of daylight during the day. Daylight helps lift our mood, gives us energy and stops our body from producing melatonin, the hormone that helps us sleep."

So it's not just us being lazy, it's legit SCIENCE that explains why we've been feeling so crappy over the last month.

James added: "We are all going through that feeling at the moment of getting up for work and thinking, 'Surely it is not time to get up, it is still the middle of the night!'

"In terms of trying to combat this, having as much daylight exposure as possible - particularly earlier in the day - can help this, and if you struggle to get daylight you can buy portable light boxes."

Light boxes, eh? Turns out there are loads available, to suit all sorts of different budgets. They're chiefly designed to conquer the lethargy that you feel during the change of seasons - they emit a blue light which helps you to wake up with a lifted mood, extra concentration and more natural energy.

They are also said to help treat the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (known as SAD).

Of course, if you're feeling more down than usual or have any concerns, it's always worth speaking to someone. Perhaps consider seeing your doctor - or else you can contact the numbers below.
