Meghan Markle's father Thomas has spoken out about a letter from his daughter that was leaked to the British press following her 2018 wedding.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Thomas admitted to hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid that he had leaked part of it.

He said: "I'm the one who released the letter, part of the letter.

"That was because a magazine was doing a story about me. Meghan's friends were telling a story me, they were mostly lies, and after reading these things - these lies - I said, 'I have to retaliate.'

"By retaliating, I released part of the letter."

The Duchess of Sussex took the Mail on Sunday to court in 2018 for publishing a letter from Thomas - citing misuse of her private information, breach of copyright, and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 - but he denied having leaked its entire contents.

He continued: "I didn't release the whole letter. Had I done that, you would've seen something that was horrible. I had held that letter for six months and I was gonna destroy it, it was so bad."

At this point, Piers asked: "Something that Meghan said to you?"

Thomas replied: "Yes. A lot of things that were said to me. The word love was never in the letter for me, although the people at the magazine said she reached out to me with love.

"That wasn't in that letter at all, that wasn't what it was intended to do."

The case was ultimately won by Meghan, with the newspaper ordered to pay 90% of her legal fees and print a front-page statement by the High Court earlier this year.

In her and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this week, Meghan told of her discomfort in talking about her relationship with her father.

When asked if it felt like a 'betrayal' to learn of her father working with the media, she replied: "I'm trying to decide if I'm comfortable even talking about that... if we were going to use the word betrayal."

She added: "When I asked him, when we were told by the comms team, this is a story that was going to be coming out, which, by the way, the tabloids had apparently known for a month or so and decided to hold until the Sunday before our wedding.

"They wanted to create drama, which is also a really key point in all this."

"We called my dad and I asked him and he said, no, absolutely not.

"I said, you know, the institution has never intervened for anything for us, but they can try to go in and kill this story.

"But if they do this once, we're not going to be able to use that same leverage to protect our own kids one day."

Continuing with the line of questioning, Oprah said: "He said no, absolutely not. He hadn't been talking to them. So he basically lied to you."

Meghan added: "So when I said we won't be able to protect our own kids one day and I said, so I just need you to tell me.

"And if you tell me the truth, we can help. And he wasn't able to do that. And that for me has really resonated, especially now as a mother.

"And also me saying just full stop, if we use this to protect you, [we] won't be able to protect our own children one day.

"Well, I'm talking about your grandchildren. I look at Archie, I think about this child and I genuinely can't imagine doing anything to intentionally cause pain to my child.

"I can't imagine it. So it's hard for me to reconcile that."
