Three men have blown up an ATM in a Chinese takeout restaurant in Philadelphia while the establishment was still open, but were unable to get any cash.

Police said the men entered the Golden Chinese/American takeout restaurant in northwest Philadelphia shortly after 9pm on Friday and ordered food.

They then detonated some kind of explosive device which damaged the ATM and the window, also knocking items off shelves behind the counter.

The three men went back into the establishment but were unable to remove the cash box that was still inside the damaged ATM.

They then fled, one on a bicycle and the other two on foot. Police searched for suspects but no arrests were immediately reported.

Earlier this year, a man died hours after he attempted to break into an ATM with explosives in what police believe was an effort to raid 30 machines.

Police said that the 24-year-old man passed away following an attempt to break into the ATM near Sidekick Sports Bar in northern Philadelphia but he was thrown to the ground and sustained trauma to his upper body.

The death came after a number of machines were blown up with thieves making off with the cash inside. According to MailOnline, in some cases the entire machine was taken.

It wasn't clear who was behind the ATM thefts or how much money has been stolen. No arrests were immediately announced.

Police commissioner Danielle Outlaw said: "We believe that it is organised efforts and coordinated efforts as well."

While we're on bizarre cash machine stories, some years ago Dan Saunders turned himself in after withdrawing and splashing £1 million on private jets and Hugo Boss suits, as well as high class escorts - he even paid off his friends' student debts.

Dan Saunders had just had his card declined at a bar when he tried to buy a round of drinks for his mates. A trip to the nearest hole-in-the-wall revealed he had just £3 to his name, but desperate for a pint, the 29-year-old decided to withdraw £100 anyway and worry about the consequences later.

Although the screen said the transaction was cancelled, money came out and the bank was none the wiser.

The Australian worked out that if he went to the same ATM between midnight and 1am he could take as much money out as he wanted and not get charged.

After blowing all of the cash Dan eventually got in touch with the bank and told them what he had done. Three years later he was arrested on 111 counts related to fraud and theft. After serving a year in prison, Dan was released in May 2016.
