A toddler has been caught on camera walking with her hands in the air towards armed police officers after they pulled over two suspected shoplifters.

In the viral video, the little girl can be seen getting out of a pick-up truck and heading towards the members of the Tallahassee Police Force with her hands on her head.

The girl's mother and a one-year-old boy were also travelling in the vehicle.

The footage was filmed by a resident in a nearby car and in the clip the passengers can be heard talking about the incident.

"She's trying to get out, but she can't because she's little. She is out! Oh, she's holding her hands up. Oh my God, look at that. Oh my God," the person who filmed the footage said.

One person in the video says: "They're still holding the gun at the baby."

But this is quickly corrected by another person who says: "No, they're holding the gun at the car."

The police had stopped the vehicle after reports it contained two people who had been involved in a theft at a local store.

When officers pulled the car over they believed the suspects may have been armed, but police later confirmed the weapon was a pellet gun.

Two of the suspects, Chad M. Bom and James W. McMullen, were later charged with the theft.

After the footage went viral, police announced they would be reviewing both the video and body camera footage from the officers at the scene.

Following a review, Tallahassee Police made an update to the original statement about the incident. Chief Michael DeLeo said: "The body camera footage shows the officers' concern for the children and their compassion as they permitted the mother to care for the children.

"The mother, who is a suspect, asks an officer to hold her two-year-old as she retrieves the infant from a car seat."

The town's mayor, John Dailey, praised the police, saying: "This video footage captures the compassion demonstrated by our TPD officers during an intense situation. I'm very proud of their actions and appreciative of the work these men and women do each day to keep our community safe."
