A group of tourists has been found living in a cave in an Indian village during the coronavirus lockdown.

The six tourists had reportedly run out of money and were unable to leave the country. They had saved up just enough for food, and spent the month collecting wood for fires and water from the Ganges.

According to reports, the three men and three women had been staying at a hotel in Muni Ki Reti, near the city of Rishikesh in Uttarakhand state, which is perhaps most famous for having been the city where The Beatles stayed during their visit in 1968.

It's understood the tourists had arrived in Rishikesh two months ago and moved into the cave on 24 March, and had been living their ever since.

MailOnline has reported that while none of them have tested positive for the deadly virus, the group have been quarantined in Swarg Ashram, where they will remain for 14 days.

Speaking to The Hindustan Times, Rakendra Singh Kataith, of Lakshman Jhula police station, said: "The group includes three women and three men. Two of them hail from Ukraine and one each from Turkey, USA, France and Nepal.

"They were cooking their food using firewood. They brought the water from the Ganga flowing nearby.

"They were all brought to the police station where they said that they had shifted to the cave on March 24, after they ran out of money to pay hotel charges in [the] Muni Ki Reti area of Rishikesh where they were staying."

This comes after a Russian couple were also found living in a cave in Krabi, Thailand - they were kicked out of their hotel when the pandemic began.

According to reports, the couple told local authorities they had made a fire to keep themselves warm and were surviving on what scraps of food they could find.

They only made contact with police to report that their camera and drone had been stolen last month. The items were never recovered.

The two tourists were later tested for the deadly disease but results were found to be negative. They were then taken to a local free hotel where other tourists were still allowed to stay.

Thai authorities contacted the Russian Embassy to inform them of the situation in case the couple needed more help.

However, according to reports, they said they wanted to stay in Thailand during the outbreak.
