Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has today (Friday 17 September) announced a simpler system Brits can now use for International travel.

There is now just one single red list for countries that cannot be visited.

The previous travel light system (with your ambers and greens) has now been scrapped.

Also, eight countries will be removed from the red list from 4am on Wednesday 22 September, including Turkey, Pakistan and the Maldives.

Overall, the simplified travel measures for arrivals from the rest of the world start from Monday 4 October at 4am.

Testing requirements will also be reduced for eligible fully vaccinated travellers, who will no longer need to take a PDT when travelling to England from Monday 4 October at 4am.

From the end of October, if you're fully jabbed will be able to replace their day 2 test with a cheaper lateral flow test, reducing the cost of tests on arrival into England.

The Government say that they want to have it in place at the end of October for when people return from half-term breaks.

Anyone testing positive will need to isolate and take a confirmatory PCR test, at no additional cost.

Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary said: "Today's changes mean a simpler, more straightforward system.

"One with less testing and lower costs, allowing more people to travel, see loved ones or conduct business around the world while providing a boost for the travel industry."

"Public health has always been at the heart of our international travel policy and with more than 8 in 10 adults vaccinated people fully vaccinated in the UK, we are now able to introduce a proportionate updated structure that reflects the new landscape."

Tim Alderslade, CEO of Airlines UK, the industry body, said: "This is a positive step which moves us much closer to the reopening of UK aviation and provides greater reassurance to passengers desperate to travel.

"By reducing the number of red list destinations and scrapping PCR testing, ministers have paved the way for people to get away this October half-term and into the winter following 18 months of uncertainty.

"It will provide a real shot in the arm for a sector that until now has not been allowed to trade properly."
