A tsunami warning was put in place after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit near Fukushima prefecture on the east coast on Japan at 8.59pm UK time. It was initially reported as 7.3, but has been since been downgraded. Its depth was between six and seven miles and was even felt in Tokyo, though initial fears of a sizeable tsunami appear to be over.
Japanese news agency NHK stated that a two-foot tsunami has hit, but nothing more than that right now. There are reports of a few injuries, but no casualties.
The area was devastated in 2011 on March 16 when a tsunami killed around 16 thousand people and destroyed its nuclear power plant. That time, the 9.1 earthquake's epicentre was just off the island of Tōhoku.
